For the first time, CARE International in Vanuatu has appointed a Ni-Vanuatu as its Country Director. She is Wilmaraia Sinumila.
Sinumila assumed her new role earlier this month following a rigorous selection process. She brings her diverse professional executive experience built over 15 years within the private and public sector to the role.
The new Country Director has a strong background in strategic leadership, human resources management, project management, business continuity and disaster recovery.
As an entrepreneur, Sinumila started her consultancy business in 2016 providing consultancy services for Vanuatu Government agencies, the United Nations and World Bank (IFC). She brings to the CARE in Vanuatu team and community, her professional and personal experience to the Women in Economic Empowerment Program with CARE in Vanuatu.
Reflecting on her appointment, Sinumila said: “In the words of John Maxwell, ‘you cannot give what you don’t have’. I have been afforded the opportunity to develop as a woman leader by my family, community, church and employers. What better way to give back to my community and the women and girls of Vanuatu than by sharing my story and experience within an organisation that truly cares about making a difference, when and where it matters the most. It is a privilege and honor to be entrusted with this leadership role within CARE in Vanuatu and the international CARE confederation. I stand ready to make a difference in the lives of women and girls; and being at the forefront of emergency response.”
The interim Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of CARE Australia, Morgana Ryan, said that Sinumila’s appointment to the Country Director role reiterates their commitment to women’s leadership and reflects the calibre of women in the Pacific and Vanuatu.
“We are pleased to announce this appointment and see it as a natural reflection of the growing empowerment of women in the Pacific region and Vanuatu,” Ryan said in a statement.
CARE has been working in Vanuatu since 2008 in partnership with local organisations, governments and communities to strengthen development, progress gender equality and social inclusion, and support disaster preparedness, response and recovery.
