Club Hippique Laho residents repair their own roads

By Terence Malapa.

Residents of Club Hippique Laho subdivision took matters into their own hands last weekend, repairing about five kilometres of road from the main access point, locally known as “Hed blong Buluk.”

For decades, roads in the subdivision have deteriorated, making daily life difficult for the more than 300 households living in the area. The poor conditions forced many residents, especially those living deeper inside the community, to use a rough shortcut through Stella Mare Stage Two just to reach the main road.

The growing population, including families relocated after evictions from La Colline, has put further strain on the already damaged road network.

In response, the community came together to raise funds and hire heavy machinery to clear and improve the road. The initiative brings hope to residents who have long struggled with transport challenges.

Long-time resident Morino Malapa said the project has given many families relief and optimism.
“Due to poor road conditions, it has been very difficult to transport goods weighing over 10 kilograms to our homes, especially for women carrying heavy loads over long distances,” he said.

He added that while the progress is encouraging, more work remains and further fundraising will be needed to complete the road upgrades.

Residents also voiced frustration over years of unfulfilled promises by political leaders, particularly during election campaigns.

Despite this, many mothers in the community said they are pleased with the improvements so far, noting that better road access is vital for safety, transport, and daily life.
