Small businesses in Vanuatu’s capital are working together to overcome challenges and develop creative solutions for long-term success, which is crucial to the recovery and growth of the local business economy post-earthquake.
This was demonstrated as the Pandanus Store relocated to a new space and adopted a new approach, a strategic move in response to the ongoing challenges for businesses following the earthquake in December 2024, which has resulted in no access to the Central Business District (CBD) in Port Vila.
The Pandanus store, which was located next to ANZ in the CBD, has been running for over 15 years and is owned by Mrs. Nicola Barnes, who is also the Small Business Representative for the Vanuatu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI). Mrs. Barnes emphasises the importance of communication and negotiation in finding suitable solutions during these challenging times.
“The situation with the inability to access the CBD and very little communication from the authorities on their recovery plans is very difficult,” she said.
“Businesses make decisions based on information, and the key information is currently not easily available to everyone. However, through open discussions and effective negotiation with other business owners, and with thanks to sensible landlords, we have managed to find a space that benefits all of us.”
Pandanus’ new and larger location, on the main road at the entrance to Au Fare/Pizza Hot, allows them to share the space with other local businesses and co-host the Craft Corner and Oki Dokie Tattoos.
The Craft Corner features products from multiple “Made in Vanuatu” local handicraft providers, currently including Yumi Up, Abel’s Handcarving, Merly Handicraft, and Bella Oil Vanuatu.
Oki Dokie Tattoos is a well-established tattoo business that is popular with both tourists and locals and is fast becoming an icon in Port Vila. This collaboration cultivates a vibrant and collaborative business community.
This new space on the main road offers increased visibility, off-street parking, and a great selection of products and services that aim to appeal to both residents and visitors. Furthermore, the new location will help promote local products and talents, creating a space where customers can experience the unique craftsmanship that Vanuatu’s small businesses have to offer.
Mrs. Barnes said small businesses are the backbone of Vanuatu’s economy and employ more Ni-Vanuatu people than any other sector.
“By supporting each other, as in this example, businesses can create a resilient and thriving business environment and develop more local entrepreneurs,” she added.
“As a consequence of the earthquake and as seen in recent data released by VCCI, hundreds of people have already been made unemployed, and thus it is now everyone’s responsibility to do all they can to change that and recover the economy for the sake of all families.”
The move demonstrates the importance of adaptation, good communication, and community-driven solutions in overcoming challenges. It also reflects Mrs. Barnes’ continued commitment to furthering a supportive and sustainable business environment in Vanuatu.
Pandanus Store remains committed to showcasing and supporting local artisans, ensuring that their work continues to be appreciated and celebrated.
