The SHEFA/Port Vila Public Land Transport Association (PLTA) has voiced serious concerns over unfulfilled government promises. President Donald Massing informed the Daily Post that a potential strike is being considered at their Annual General Meeting, hinting at the possibility of a major strike by land transport operators.
Speaking ahead of the PLTA’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), Massing warned that between 3,000 to 4,000 valid public land transport operators, including taxis, buses, tour operators, and rental car drivers, could halt operations if the government does not address their grievances.
“Does the government have a plan? We need to know,” Massing said. “We are the lifeblood of the business community. If we strike, it will affect businesses and the economy.”
Massing expressed frustration over the apparent mismanagement of road tax funds, noting that operators pay road tax yet see little improvement in road conditions.
“The road tax collected in Port Vila alone should be enough to fix the roads. Where is the money going?” he questioned.
The PLTA’s SHEFA Port Vila Public Land Transport Association has officially announced the AGM, scheduled for Friday, November 29, a public holiday.
All valid members, including drivers and vehicle owners, are encouraged to attend as critical issues concerning their livelihoods will be discussed.
The AGM is expected to be a pivotal moment for the transport sector, with potential outcomes that could disrupt Port Vila’s daily operations if no resolution is reached.
