Sam’s Animal Welfare hosts pop-up veterinary clinic at Erakor today

By Charles Hakwa.

Sam’s Animal Welfare (SAW) will be running a pop-up veterinary clinic at Erakor village today, Wednesday, 25 September 2024. All treatments offered are free of charge.

Dr Karin O’Connor from the Veterinary Clinic at Bellevue is helping to coordinate the clinic as part of SAW; however, a member from Vets Beyond Borders (VBB) will be in charge. Dr O’Connor says there will be three vets and three nurses, plus a vet coordinator coming from Australia.

She notes that they will mainly focus on desexing; however, dogs and cats will also be treated for worms, fleas, ticks, and mange. Any other medical problems—such as bush knife injuries, dog fight wounds, and skin issues—will also be addressed in the pop-up clinic; however, serious injuries will be taken to the Veterinary Clinic at Bellevue for treatment.

Dr O’Connor states that desexing will be conducted in a safe and sterile manner. The animals will be kept in cages until they are awake enough to return home under the care of their owners.

These dogs will be able to walk.

SAW is planning more pop-up clinics with VBB next year but has not finalised the dates or locations yet.

SAW would like to acknowledge VBB and the Brigitte Bardot Foundation, as well as all their volunteers.

A special thank you also goes out to everyone who has donated to SAW over the past year.

Without these donations, SAW would not be able to conduct these clinics or continue the weekly Wednesday desexing clinics through the Veterinary Clinic.

Dr O’Connor expresses gratitude to Mangoes Resort for providing accommodation for the volunteers, as well as thanks to Arthur Kalsrap in Erakor Village for offering the site for the pop-up clinic, and to Naman for dedicating so much time to help them plan the visit.
