The Vanuatu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) has partnered with the Government of Vanuatu to assist businesses applying for the Government’s Earthquake Subsidy.
Support from VCCI includes document verification, form completion, and electronic submission to the Government’s Finance Office. To date, VCCI has submitted over 400 completed applications.
The earthquake subsidy is available to businesses holding a valid business licence and operating in the areas most physically impacted, known as the ‘Red Zone’ in Port Vila.
There are two application pathways: vendors and small businesses may apply through the Small Business Grant (SBG), while larger businesses registered for Value Added Tax (VAT) can apply through the Wage Subsidy Scheme (WSS).
Although the programme has been broadly welcomed, some larger businesses have reported difficulty meeting the eligibility criteria.
Feedback from the business community indicates that although many have experienced serious revenue and cash flow losses, they are excluded from support because they fall outside the designated red zone. Some operators, particularly in the tourism sector, remain severely affected despite not having offices in the required locations.
There are also ongoing concerns about delays in subsidy payments due to internal finance processing.
“VCCI is here to support the business community, and while this Government programme may not assist everyone, we are available to help anyone who needs support with the application process,” said Joanna Spencer, Acting General Manager of VCCI.
