The New Zealand Government has provided VT200 million to the Department of Tourism (DOT) and the Vanuatu Tourism Office (VTO) under the Vanuatu Tourism Recovery and Resilience Programme, which spans from 2024 to 2026.
Additionally, the Australian Government, through its Economic Support Package, has committed over VT100 million to assist with the recovery of Vanuatu’s tourism and aviation sectors.
Minister of Finance and Economic Management and Acting Minister of Trade and Commerce Johnny Koanapo expressed gratitude for the financial support from both countries. “On behalf of the Government, the Ministry of Trade and Commerce, and the people of Vanuatu, we humbly say thank you. You continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with us through hard times to ease our recovery,” he said.
Koanapo stressed the importance of sustainable tourism, urging responsibility in protecting local communities and ecosystems while promoting tourism growth.
“Sustainable tourism is necessary to protect our environment, respect cultural heritage, and empower local economies,” the Minister said.
He called on the government, businesses, and travellers to collaborate in creating and promoting sustainable tourism, ensuring that Vanuatu’s natural beauty and cultural heritage are preserved for future generations.
Koanapo also noted the multifaceted approach Vanuatu is taking toward sustainable tourism development, focusing on environmental protection, community engagement, and economic diversification. By linking tourism with other sectors, Vanuatu is working towards a resilient future where tourism benefits the nation and its people.
