Mamas’ Flowers start selling in June

By Len Garae.

The sudden death of the President of the Mamas’ Flower Association of Port Vila, Maurice Horry of Emau, has prompted the Executive to change the date of its first three-day flower sales this year from March to June.

The Executive will confirm the exact date a week in advance.

The late President and Founder of the Association Horry passed away on November 29.

A source from the Executive source said the date has been moved to June to allow administrative matters to be completed with the Government Ministry of Home Affairs before announcing the actual sales date is announced for this year.

The source said, “The Executive also wishes to thank the Ministry of Home Affairs for assuring the members on their last day of sales last November of two important decisions.

“One, for setting up solar lights to light up the sales site on the grassy slope below the flag Pole at night and two, to waive the Vt15,000 fee members had to pay for the three days of sales”.

The source wishes to assure the Government of the members’ commitment to continue to work with the Government, to promote its climate change policy to sell not only flowers but also seedlings of fruit trees as well as seedlings of sandalwood as well as mahogany and other important trees.

The Executive encouraged the over one hundred members of the association, to capitalise on the current rainy season to continue to tend to their flowers ahead of its first sales this coming June.

The truth was that the Association President’s sudden death, threw all members’ focus into confusion. “For many elderly members, the earnings they make during their sales put food on the table as well as pay for school fees and other expenses”, one of them said.
