Lord Mayor urges businesses to decorate for Independence Day

All businesses around Port Vila are encouraged to decorate the outside of their offices in preparation for Independence Day.

Lord Mayor of Port Vila City Council (PVCC), Steve Kiel, reflected that, as is the practice, as Independence Day approaches, all businesses decorated their front offices and hung Vanuatu flags, which looked beautiful.

He said businesses operating in Port Vila should participate in the celebration as Independence Day happens once a year. He stressed that no one is stopping them from joining in the festivities.

The Lord Mayor appealed to all businesses, including Chinese shops and other offices around Port Vila City and its suburbs, to decorate their front offices.

He reminded them that during the night, they should have lights on in their offices or at least have one light on in their offices or shops, or light the front or back of their offices. This, he noted, is important as visitors might want to do night shopping around Port Vila City. During the day, they can go and buy things as well.

Kiel appealed to all business owners, government offices, ministries, and shops to decorate their offices and clean their areas, emphasising that this is a once-a-year celebration of Vanuatu’s independence.

He thanked the businesses that have made it a practice to decorate their offices and shops when Independence Day approaches.

Kiel also noted that gifts given to high officials and their wives during the ‘Yumi 40’ celebration will not happen this year. He explained that the budget allocated to the committee was not enough, and they are very sorry that there won’t be any gifts for the leaders this year.

However, he stressed that this doesn’t stop the leaders from coming together and celebrating this independence together.

Mayor Kiel clarified that gifts happen only once during the ‘Yumi 40’ celebration, and if they have enough budget in the future, they will call all the leaders and have gifts for them and their spouses.
