Free Seafront Wi-Fi Launched as Port Vila Celebrates 51st Anniversary

Residents and visitors can now enjoy free internet access at the Port Vila seafront area following the official launch of a new public Wi-Fi service during celebrations marking the 51st anniversary of the Port Vila City Council (PVCC) yesterday.

The initiative, delivered in partnership with Pacific Network, was announced by Acting Town Clerk Etienne Ravo during his official Port Vila Day address, where he described the project as a major step forward in digital inclusion and community development.

Speaking under this year’s theme, “Rebuild Together and Grow Strong,” Mr. Ravo said innovation remains central to the city’s progress as Port Vila continues its recovery and development efforts.

“The launch of free Wi-Fi at the seafront today, in partnership with Pacific Network, marks a milestone in digital inclusion,” he said.

“This initiative bridges communities, enhances learning, and supports business growth.”

According to Mr. Ravo, the project will provide greater access to information and online services for residents, students, tourists, and businesses while helping to strengthen connectivity within the capital.

The Wi-Fi launch was one of several initiatives highlighted during the anniversary celebrations, which commemorated 51 years of civic service and community progress under the stewardship of the PVCC.

Mr. Ravo also announced the installation of solar lighting at the seafront, describing it as another important investment in sustainability, public safety, and modern infrastructure.

He said the council remains committed to building a more resilient and connected city while creating opportunities for economic growth and community wellbeing.

The Acting Town Clerk used the occasion to officially unveil the PVCC Strategic Plan 2026–2030, which aligns with the national People’s Plan 2030 and outlines priorities in infrastructure development, innovation, community services, environmental stewardship, and economic growth.

He acknowledged that challenges such as waste management, urban expansion, financial constraints, and climate resilience continue to face the city, but said they also present opportunities for innovation and stronger partnerships.

Mr. Ravo also paid tribute to donor partners, non-governmental organisations, and community stakeholders whose support has contributed to the city’s recovery and rebuilding efforts following recent disasters.

As part of preparations for the Port Vila municipal elections scheduled for August this year, he announced that the council has waived all fees for National ID card printing during the Port Vila Day celebrations to encourage residents to prepare for voter registration and participation.

Concluding his address, Mr. Ravo called on residents to continue working together to build a stronger future for the capital.

“Port Vila is not merely a city, but a community of people united in purpose. Together, we rebuild. Together, we grow strong,” he said.
