The Destination Mothers Association, a group of over 30 women operating a roadside market on the road to the airport in Bladinier, is generating weekly earnings of up to Vatu (VT) 20,000 to support their families.
Leisi Jack, a member of the association, shared that while the income is substantial, it is also used to cover their operational expenses.
“In one week, we usually make around VT20,000 by selling food at the market, but we also have expenses that need to be deducted,” she explained.
The association, formed by local mothers, was created to improve their livelihoods. They built the roadside market themselves and organised the group into two teams, each taking turns to sell on assigned days.
Jack, who has been selling at the market, explained that the association’s name, Destination Mothers Association, reflects the area where they reside, known as “Destination.”
Despite their success, the group faces challenges. One pressing concern is the lack of amenities such as toilets, tables, and chairs for customers.
Jack mentioned that the mothers have been paying fees to the Port Vila City Council, which initially promised to provide these facilities.
“We pay VT6,000 this year to sell at the market, but last year it was VT12,000. We’ve shared our ideas and complaints with the municipal council, but they haven’t made any attempt yet to build the promised facilities,” she said.
Looking ahead, the association plans to expand the market to accommodate more sellers and improve the shopping experience for customers. However, they emphasise that further support from the municipal council will be critical to realising their goals.
