Betro Nai: From Hotel Waiter to successful Tuluk Vendor

By Amona Kellen.

Betro Nai, a well-known figure in Mele Village, has been the main vendor of tuluk on Port Vila for the past 44 years.

Initially employed as a waiter at the Holiday Inn Resort from 1975 to 1980, Nai transitioned from serving guests in a luxury setting to offering the beloved local dish, tuluk.

Reflecting on his time as a waiter, Nai shared his passion for the job: “I loved being a waiter because I enjoyed serving people and tourists visiting our country.” However, he resigned due to the long commute and safety concerns.

In 1981, Nai began selling tuluk, a minced pork dish, and has continued in this role ever since.

He sells approximately 120 tuluk daily, adjusting the quantity based on demand.

“Sometimes, when I notice good sales, I increase the number of tuluk to 150,” he explained.

Nai earns between Vatu (VT)15,000 and VT18,000 weekly and observes the competitive nature of the local market.

Despite this, he finds the work profitable and vital for supporting his family. He encourages others to explore small business opportunities, advising, “Don’t just sit at home and do nothing. There are many opportunities to earn money through small businesses.”

Nai’s successful transition from a hotel waiter to a local vendor reflects the potential for entrepreneurship and its impact on personal and community well-being.
