RTP Episode 5 with Niki Kuautonga: Entrepreneurship, education and mindset

In Episode 5 of the Round Table Podcast (RTP), Director of Sista, Yasmine Covo, speaks with Niki Kuautonga, one of Vanuatu’s most recognised photographers and filmmakers, about storytelling, entrepreneurship, education, and mindset.

Mr. Kuautonga shares his journey from borrowing equipment to working on major projects with governments, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), and international partners.

A central theme is the importance of understanding the story behind the work. Kuautonga explains that photography and filmmaking go beyond visuals — they require a deep understanding of the subject.

“You can’t capture the story if you don’t understand it,” he says, emphasising how storytelling can simplify complex issues and connect with communities.

The conversation also explores building a creative career in Vanuatu. Kuautonga highlights the value of consistency and long-term commitment, noting that recognition takes time.

He encourages young people to make the most of their freedom while they can, before responsibilities grow.

Education is another key topic, with Kuautonga reflecting on his struggles in the formal school system and his preference for hands-on learning. He challenges the idea that success only comes through academics, encouraging alternative pathways based on individual strengths and interests.

The discussion expands into beliefs about work and success, particularly the narrow definition of a “good job.” Kuautonga points out a gap in education systems, saying, “You learn how to become a doctor, but you don’t learn how to make money,” opening up the need for financial literacy and entrepreneurship.

A recurring concern is the belief that opportunities only exist overseas. Kuautonga warns that this mindset can limit potential and creativity, stressing the importance of creating opportunities locally.

Despite challenges like criticism and lack of support, especially in close-knit communities, Kuautonga encourages resilience and self-belief.

He reminds listeners that “Where you start doesn’t mean that’s where you will end up,” highlighting the importance of persistence and mindset.

Overall, the episode emphasises that success is not defined by one path. With determination, self-belief, and a willingness to think differently, individuals can create their own opportunities and shape their future.
