MV Blue Wota resumes inter-island service after upgrades

Aelan Express has resumed its inter island service after a month long break, with operations restarting today, Thursday. The first trip will travel to Malekula and Santo before returning to Port Vila on Friday.

The return of the MV Blue Wota marks the resumption of a key transport link between Port Vila, Malekula and Santo. Services had been paused to allow for maintenance and service improvements.

Pierre Brunet Shipping management said the break was necessary after one of the vessel’s engines required a full overhaul.

“We stopped the rotation at the end of February because one of the engines needed an overhaul. We decided to carry out the work immediately and use the time to improve services before restarting operations,” management said.

During the break, the company repaired the engine and used feedback from passengers on earlier trips to improve onboard services. Changes include improved air conditioning, upgrades to the cafeteria, and the introduction of onboard Wi Fi.

The management said the addition of Wi Fi is intended to support business travellers and students who rely on connectivity during the journey, which can take up to a full day between Port Vila and Santo.

Due to operational and safety requirements, internet access will be limited through a voucher system. Two plans are available, allowing passengers to check emails or carry out basic tasks while at sea.

The company has also introduced an online booking system through its website, allowing passengers to reserve and pay for tickets in advance. The platform supports Visa card payments as well as BRED Bank smart cards, making ticket access easier for both locals and tourists.

The system also allows organisations and frequent travellers to arrange group bookings and plan ahead.

“We improved our process to welcome passengers, making it easier, faster and safer,” management said. “We introduced tools to scan QR codes for boarding passes, similar to airport systems, to improve efficiency.”

The service resumes ahead of the Easter period, when inter island travel usually increases as families reunite and communities prepare for celebrations.

Management said the aim is to provide a more reliable and modern travel experience for passengers.
