Bus fares to increase after awareness: PLTA

By Nicholas Mwai.

Bus fares will increase but only after a public awareness campaign later this month.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Public Land Transport Authority (PLTA), Reginald Tabi, said the authority does not want to rush to avoid causing confusion among drivers and passengers.

The month of March will be dedicated to educating the public and bus operators about the proposed changes before the new fares are enforced, said Mr.Tabi.

The CEO explained that the necessary paperwork is still being finalized and will be reviewed by the Office of the Attorney General (AOG) before any decision is taken.

He stressed that there is still work to be done before the fare increase can come into effect.

He emphasized the importance of ensuring that bus drivers understand exactly what to charge passengers under the new structure and that the public clearly knows where fares will change and what boundaries apply.

“We need to make sure that bus drivers know where to charge the passengers, and where the public needs to pay specific bus fares,” he said.

Tabi warned that introducing the increase too quickly could result in complaints, particularly if drivers are unclear about charging points or if passengers are unsure about stopping areas and new fare boundaries.

“We don’t want to roll it out quickly and people will start to complain — drivers don’t know where to charge and people don’t know where to stop the bus and bus fares will be changed to which places, where and what boundary,” he explained.

While the exact details of adjustments are to be outlined, Tabi confirmed that the increase is expected to be implemented this year, following awareness and completion of the legal review process.
