Port Vila icon re-opens after restoration

One of Port Vila’s most recognized tourism landmarks, Grand Hotel & Casino, reopens today after being closed for more than a year following the devastating earthquake that struck the capital in December 2024.

Located along the waterfront in Port Vila, the hotel underwent a major restoration and strengthening project aimed at rebuilding and modernizing the property while ensuring stronger structural safety.

Managing Director Bettina Mahieu said the reopening marks an important milestone not only for the hotel but also for the city’s tourism and hospitality sector.

“Fourteen months ago, The Grand embarked on one of the most significant restoration projects in its history,” Mahieu said.

She explained that the work went beyond simple repairs and involved a full rebuilding process to strengthen the building’s structure and improve its internal systems.

“What followed was a comprehensive rebuild and reinstatement, incorporating reinforced internal frameworks, lightweight structural materials, and a complete re-engineering of all key systems,” she said.

According to Mahieu, the restoration represents more than just improvements to the building.

“This has been far more than an enhancement; it has been a reawakening of one of Port Vila’s most beloved icons,” she said.

The reopening today symbolizes resilience and recovery after the earthquake that forced several waterfront businesses to close for repairs.

Mahieu said the hotel’s return also brings back an important gathering place for both locals and visitors.

“The reopening represents resilience and renewal – the return of a central gathering place for locals, visitors, and our team alike,” she said.

The hotel resumes operations with a workforce of around 130 staff members.

Mahieu said the team is ready to welcome guests again as the hotel begins a new chapter.

“The Grand now unveils its next chapter, commencing with a dedicated team of 130 team members, as we look forward to taking you on this journey with us,” she said.
