The future of one of Vanuatu’s most popular and locally celebrated television programs, The Canoe Race, is now at risk. Co-producers Vanuatu Broadcasting and Television Corporation (VBTC) and V-Lab have warned that Season 2 may be cancelled unless additional funding is urgently secured.
The warning comes despite the overwhelming success of Season 1, which captivated audiences across the country and inspired a new generation of young ni-Vanuatu entrepreneurs. The show, blending entertainment with real-life business challenges, became a national phenomenon, boosting public interest in innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship.
V-Lab confirmed to Daily Post that they have spent months attempting to mobilise sponsors and secure partnerships to bring Season 2 to life. The Government of Australia, through the Australian High Commission, has already reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the new season. Several partners from Season 1, including Vodafone and Vanuatu Ferry, have also expressed willingness to return.
The Government of Vanuatu—through the Vanuatu Aid-for-Trade Management Unit, the Department of Industry, and the Vanuatu Financial Services Commission—has likewise confirmed its support.
However, according to the co-producers, these contributions still fall short of the total production costs required to launch the second season. Efforts to secure further financial backing, particularly from major financial institutions, have so far been unsuccessful.
Before making a final decision on cancellation, V-Lab has issued an open call for businesses, development partners, and institutions that recognise the value of The Canoe Race to step forward. They are seeking both financial and in-kind support, as well as technical collaborations, to keep the show alive.
“The Canoe Race has proven its national relevance and its ability to inspire young people,” the statement said. “We believe in the positive impact of this program and hope new partners will join us in making Season 2 possible.”
While the fate of Season 2 remains uncertain, both VBTC and V-Lab said their joint mission to uplift local entrepreneurship will continue. If Season 2 cannot proceed, the two organisations will explore alternative initiatives to promote and celebrate ni-Vanuatu entrepreneurial talent.
Businesses, partners, or individuals interested in supporting the next season of The Canoe Raceare encouraged to reach out as soon as possible.
