Government action vital for tourism, connectivity recovery: ESTA

A temporary six-month airline service marks a pivotal step toward restoring reliable connectivity and stimulating economic growth, while relieving pressure on AV3’s interim leaders and enabling AV3 to pursue long-term, sustainable growth.

The Espiritu Santo Tourism Association (ESTA) made this statement as it congratulates the incoming government, set to be officially formed next week, for its foresight and decisive action to address Vanuatu’s critical connectivity challenges.

“This proactive approach marks a vital turning point for our nation’s recovery and long-term development,” ESTA stated.

“Since the declaration of Air Vanuatu’s liquidation in May 2024, businesses across the country have been severely impacted, with tourism, trade, and local livelihoods facing immense uncertainty.

“The establishment of immediate assistance, led by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) of the Government of Australia, to bring in a carrier that will provide regular services to Santo, Port Vila, and Tanna for the next six months is a powerful signal of leadership and commitment.”

This support will alleviate the burden currently borne by the interim shareholders of AV3, allowing them to focus on the critical and strategic restructuring of AV3.

“The incoming government’s swift action has given the tourism and business sectors a renewed sense of optimism,” said Lisa Dinh, Vice Chair of ESTA. “Ensuring reliable connectivity across the archipelago is not only essential to revive economic activity but also to foster sustainable growth for future generations.”

The six-month operational window for the incoming carrier offers much-needed breathing space for AV3’s new board and management team as they work diligently to redefine the airline’s role in Vanuatu’s economic and social fabric.

The exploration of sustainable, reliable, and efficient connectivity options within an archipelago as unique as Vanuatu will be key to building long-term resilience and prosperity.

ESTA believes that this initiative will serve as a foundation for transformative change.

“Reliable air services are the lifeblood of our tourism industry, enabling local businesses to thrive and connecting Vanuatu with the rest of the world,” thetourism bodystated.

“The financial and logistical strain caused by Air Vanuatu’s liquidation has affected families, small businesses, and major enterprises alike. This latest step offers hope for renewed economic dynamism.

“We also commend the Government of Australia for recognising the urgency of this issue and for working tirelessly to secure a temporary but vital solution. By supporting connectivity to key hubs in Santo, Vila, and Tanna, the government is ensuring that no region is left behind in the national recovery effort.

“As we look forward to the future, the Espiritu Santo Tourism Association reaffirms its commitment to collaborating with the new government, AV3’s management, and all stakeholders to achieve a sustainable and inclusive path forward. We encourage all sectors to unite in this shared mission, creating a more resilient, vibrant, and interconnected Vanuatu.

“Together, we can seize this moment to rebuild stronger.”

The ESTA is dedicated to promoting sustainable tourism growth in Vanuatu, with a special focus on Espiritu Santo. It works closely with local businesses, communities, and government agencies to enhance the region’s appeal as a premier destination for visitors from around the world.
