New leadership for VBRC as Luen replaces Craig

The Vanuatu Business Resilience Council (VBRC) elected Eliu Luen as its new Chairman during its Annual General Meeting (AGM).

Mr. Luen, General Manager of Vanuatu Terminal Services, succeeds Glen Craig, who steps down after nearly eight years in the role.

“The private sector plays a crucial role in climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction, and humanitarian response,” said Mr. Luen.

“As a small island nation, Vanuatu has shown the world how businesses can effectively partner with government and communities to build resilience.

“I look forward to working closely with the incoming government and public servants, particularly those in climate change and resilience portfolios. It is vital that the government, private sector, and communities work together to strengthen resilience.”

Over the past 24 months, VBRC has gained international recognition for private sector engagement in climate resilience. Key achievements include deep involvement in Vanuatu’s International Court of Justice (ICJ) climate justice initiative, representation at COP28 and COP29, and effective disaster response during three cyclones in 2023 and the 2024 earthquake.

Outgoing Chairman Craig expressed confidence in the new leadership.

“I’m delighted to hand over the reins to Mr. Luen,” he said.

“His experience and understanding of the private sector’s role in disaster resilience make him an excellent choice. VBRC has built strong foundations in private sector mobilisation for humanitarian response and climate action, and I’m confident it will continue to strengthen under his leadership.”

VBRC remains an active participant in key national bodies and international forums, positioning itself as a global leader in private sector engagement for climate resilience and disaster response. As a member of the Connecting Business Initiative (CBI), VBRC continues to strengthen networks and share best practices regionally in disaster preparedness, response, and recovery.
