WSB premieres new film ‘Trees’

Wan Smol Bag (WSB) Theatre has launched its new film Trees, which premiered yesterday at Tana Cine.

The 63-minute-long movie shows the struggles of a family living in poverty, focusing on their only son, Simon Jackson, a young protagonist who faces numerous challenges as a teenager trying to survive in a tough neighbourhood.

The drama reflects life in Vanuatu, with powerful scenes depicting theft, distrust, pain, suffering, dishonesty, second chances, and forgiveness.

Talented scriptwriter Jo Dorras, who is also the wife of WSB co-founder Peter Walker, said it is easy to blame young people in society today.

“Those so-called ‘joss’ or ‘jossline’ were said to have no respect,” she added.

Dorras explained that things turned out differently for these youths. Some families struggle to pay school fees, feed their children, and lack resources and support from others.

She said the title of the film, Trees, was chosen because trees play an important role in life. They must be saved by replanting and nurturing them.

Trees also reflect the lives of youths, showing how they need care and affection to grow and thrive.

The film received support from the Kingdom of Netherlands, Australian Aid, and the New Zealand Government.

WSB Theatre is a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) based in Vanuatu but operating throughout the South Pacific. It aims to raise awareness and engage with issues such as education, health, governance, the environment, youth, and gender.
