The 6th edition of the Vanuatu Made Trade Show 2024 introduced a rising star in the art world—Dimitry Musi Kuautonga. This talented young painter, who is happily married and a proud father, showcased his work in public for the first time.

Kuautonga’s journey into the world of art began in childhood, driven by a passion for creating and painting. Little did he know that he came from a lineage of artists. Adopted into a loving family and raised in Santo, he often found himself alone, sketching his imagination while other children played.

His artistic path took a pivotal turn in 2000 when he travelled to Port Vila with his adoptive father at the age of 18. It was during this journey that he discovered the artistic legacy of his biological family—his father and brothers were all artists. Inspired by this revelation, Kuautonga dedicated himself to honing his craft, striving not only for personal growth but also to create works that resonate with others.

While Kuautonga primarily focuses on drawing, he has been fortunate to collaborate with his brother Kiki and uncle Tony on larger projects. These experiences have allowed him to gain valuable insights into painting techniques and skills. “When you know the basics, you can create beautiful art,” he said, acknowledging the importance of a strong foundation.

What drives Kuautonga’s creativity is his ability to translate thoughts into art. “As soon as I envision something, I start drawing it,” he explained, describing the thrill of turning ideas into unique creations. This imaginative process sets him apart, allowing him to craft original pieces rather than replicating the work of others.

At the trade show, Kuautonga unveiled a stunning painting inspired by the energy of people moving freely around Feiawa Park. He also showcased two additional works that were auctioned off, capturing the attention of attendees with their vibrant colours and emotive themes.

Kuautonga is passionate about encouraging the youth of Vanuatu to embrace their talents. “If you have a gift, use it now,” he urges, reminding everyone of the importance of seizing opportunities before they slip away.

As the Vanuatu Made Trade Show continues to showcase the rich tapestry of local artistry, Kuautonga’s story serves as a reminder of the transformative power of creativity and the importance of sharing one’s gifts with the world.
