The Vanuatu Rural Development Bank (VRDB) officially reopened its Santo branch on May 23, marking what Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Philan Kalmanu called “a powerful symbol” of the bank’s commitment to bringing financial services closer to rural communities in the Northern region.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Kalmanu said the new branch is more than just a building — it represents a renewed push to provide affordable, accessible financial services that support farmers, vendors, small businesses, and families.
“Santo is a vital economic hub for Vanuatu,” Kalmanu said. “From agriculture and fisheries to tourism and trade, it is full of potential and promise. But we know many hardworking individuals still face barriers in accessing the finance they need. Today, we are breaking down those barriers.”
Kalmanu said VRDB is not just a bank, but a development partner committed to walking alongside communities to grow livelihoods and support local economies. He spoke about the importance of entrepreneurship, innovation, and self-investment as keys to national economic independence, noting that “people doing business are the cornerstone of Vanuatu’s economy.”
The bank’s long-term strategy includes expanding its reach across every major island in the country, with a promise that no Ni-Vanuatu — whether in the Banks, Torres, Pentecost, Malekula, or Aniwa — will be left out of the development journey. Kalmanu said VRDB is continuing to invest in infrastructure, technology, and digital services to reach even the most remote communities.
He thanked the VRDB Chairman and Board Members for their leadership, and acknowledged the dedication of VRDB staff across the country. Kalmanu also expressed appreciation to the people of Santo for their warm welcome, saying the bank is ready to work with the community to support local ambitions.
“Together, let us build a Vanuatu where geography does not limit opportunity, where prosperity is driven by our own hands, and where no one is left behind,” Kalmanu said.
The reopening was attended by community leaders, government representatives, business partners, and the Lord Mayor of Luganville, showing broad local support for VRDB’s effort to expand rural economic opportunities.
