Tourism Department prepares Maewo for National Agriculture Expo

Tourism operators, homestay hosts and community tourism businesses on Maewo are receiving training and support from the Department of Tourism (DoT) ahead of the National Agriculture Expo (NAE) 2026, as the island prepares to welcome an expected increase in visitors from 3 to 7 August.

With visitor numbers expected to increase during the Expo, the Department has deployed officers to help operators strengthen their readiness to welcome guests from across Vanuatu. Support includes the distribution of tourism resource materials, refresher training for accommodation providers and homestay hosts, and on-site guidance to improve visitor services and hospitality standards.

The activities are being carried out in partnership with the NAE Committee, recognising the role tourism plays in supporting national events and creating additional economic opportunities for local communities.

The Department acknowledged the work of William Smith Mala, PENAMA Provincial Tourism Manager, and Lesly Mera, Tourism Product Development Officer, who are on Maewo coordinating the delivery of assistance and working directly with tourism operators and host communities to prepare for the Expo.

During the Expo, the DoT will also operate an information and service booth at the event site. Tourism operators, businesses and members of the public are invited to visit the booth for tourism permit renewals, general tourism enquiries and administrative assistance, information on Department of Tourism programmes and services, and advice on tourism standards, accreditation and business development opportunities.

The Department encourages visitors attending the NAE to explore Maewo’s tourism attractions, support local businesses, and experience the island’s culture, hospitality and natural beauty.

The NAE is more than an agricultural showcase. It also provides an opportunity to demonstrate how agriculture and tourism can work together to strengthen local economies, generate income for communities and support sustainable provincial development.

The DoT wished the NAE Committee, participating exhibitors, tourism operators and the people of Maewo every success for the upcoming event.
