The rich aroma of Vanuatu’s finest coffee captivated thousands of international visitors over the weekend, as Tanna Coffee hosted three well-attended tasting events at the Vanuatu Pavilion during the World Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan.
Held across Saturday and Sunday, the events drew large crowds and resulted in over 1,000 cups of freshly brewed coffee being served in just a few hours. The activation significantly boosted visibility and foot traffic at the Vanuatu Pavilion, earning widespread praise from international guests for both the taste and the story behind Vanuatu’s growing coffee industry.
Tanna Coffee’s origins date back to 1852, when coffee cultivation first began in the fertile volcanic soils of Tanna Island. Today, the company produces 100% pure Arabica beans, prized globally for their fresh, clean, full-bodied profile and distinctive nutty flavour with a smooth, non-bitter finish.
Led by Managing Director Terry Adlington, Tanna Coffee is widely recognised for its commitment to inclusive and sustainable agri-business. The company works in partnership with over 500 smallholder farmers, promoting organic farming, fair trade principles, and community empowerment through intercropping and shared value chains. As part of its current development phase, Tanna Coffee is working with the National Bank of Vanuatu (NBV) to expand production through an innovative House and Land Ownership Program.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Adlington said, “Japan is a very good marketing opportunity for us, as they are now drinking much more coffee than previously and are becoming far more sophisticated in their appreciation of good coffee quality. This is the seventh World Expo I’ve attended, mostly as a representative of the agriculture and manufacturing sectors of Vanuatu. Thank you to the World Expo Committee and staff for their valued support.”
As part of Vanuatu’s broader strategy for the World Expo 2025, each exporter featured in the Vanuatu Made pavilion will have the chance to travel to Osaka and promote their products through dedicated side events, including Business-To-Business (B2B) meetings with Japanese distributors and partners.
The National Expo Committee (NEC) remains focused on maximizing private sector engagement, using the Expo platform not only to highlight Vanuatu’s premium goods but also to create new commercial partnerships and attract foreign investment.
The success of Tanna Coffee’s tasting weekend marks a strong beginning to what is expected to be a transformative journey for Vanuatu’s private sector, shining a spotlight on the country’s agricultural excellence and entrepreneurial spirit on the global stage.
