Commissioner of Police (COMPOL) Kalshem Bongran revealed to the Vanuatu Daily Post yesterday evening that Fexco has confirmed the two robbers seized approximately AUD600,000, equivalent to VT49 million, at Port Vila International Airport Cargo Terminal on Monday at 11.59am, not VT8 million as initially reported.
Fexco Pacific is the largest Western Union agent in the region, offering a wide range of currency exchange services.
The updated figure was confirmed as Commissioner Bongran said that more than 24 hours after the robbery, the suspects remain on the run while police investigations continue.
He said investigators gained access to airport CCTV footage yesterday.
The footage clearly shows that the robber who approached the Fexco vehicle, opened the door, and seized the money was not armed. It also shows another robber positioned behind the vehicle, although it remains unclear whether he was carrying a weapon.
The belief that the suspects were armed came from a statement by a female Fexco staff member, who alleged she saw part of a wrapped object on one robber’s arm and believed it to be a firearm.
Contrary to reports suggesting the robbers were wearing black clothing, Commissioner Bongran said CCTV footage shows the suspects were dressed in white uniforms similar to those used during the COVID-19 period.
He confirmed that VMF checkpoints at the Tagabe Agriculture Station and the Salili area have been removed.
Commissioner Bongran said police will continue searching across Port Vila, nearby villages, and the wider Efate area until the suspects are arrested.
He added that police have obtained leads and witness statements that are expected to assist in locating the suspects.
Commissioner Bongran called on the suspects to voluntarily surrender to community leaders or report to the nearest police station before being apprehended.
He appealed to the media, particularly social media users, to support police efforts by helping with the arrest of the suspects rather than assisting them to remain at large.
He also urged the media to carry out responsible reporting and avoid circulating allegations or false information that could cause public fear across Port Vila and Efate.
Commissioner Bongran reassured residents of Port Vila and Efate to remain calm as police continue their investigations.
