Retreat Seaside helps former Reefers workers find jobs after earthquake

In the wake of the devastating earthquake that led to the closure of Reefers Restaurant & Rum Bar in Port Vila, four of its former employees have found new opportunities at the Retreat Seaside Resort, Bar, and Restaurant.

Esther Joyline, Magalie Massingalo, Ancie Willie, and Stephanie Touraly, who previously worked at Reefers, are now employed under probation at the Retreat.

Having hired these women, the Retreat Seaside Resort has absorbed nearly half the Reefers staff, which had a total of ten employees.

The iconic Reefers, located opposite Tana Russet Plaza, was a beloved venue for dining and drinks among locals, tourists, and expatriates.

Unfortunately, the 7.3-magnitude earthquake caused substantial damage, including the collapse of the restaurant’s thatched roof, forcing the establishment to close indefinitely.

“After the earthquake, we heard about the damage at Reefers, including how the roof nearly landed on some people,” said Daniel Hogarth, owner of the Retreat Seaside Resort.

“When I spoke to Michael Benjamin (of Reefers), he was deeply concerned about the staff and their future. I sympathised and offered to help. “Michael provided a list of his employees, and we expedited interviews to hire as many as we could. I’m glad we could do our bit to keep people employed during such a challenging time.”

The four women are currently one week into their probation period and are taking on various roles, including working in the kitchen, bar, and restaurant. Mr. Hogarth conveyed satisfaction with their performance, noting they have been an excellent addition to the team.

“We look forward to them becoming permanent members of our staff after probation,” he added. Ms Massingalo, now working at the bar, expressed her gratitude to the Retreat and Mr. Hogarth for extending a helping hand during a difficult time.

“This job means a lot to me and my family, who have also been affected by the disaster,” she said.

The Retreat also extended condolences to the families of the earthquake victims, expressing hope for recovery and resilience in the community.

“At this point, we are concentrating on the staff we have here. But we are always happy to receive resumes at [email protected],” Mr. Hogarth said.

The Nasama Resort has also been seeking staff, providing another option for those seeking employment.

The story of these four women highlights the power of community support and the importance of helping one another rebuild after a natural disaster.
