Restoration of electricity to Ifira hinges on clearance of road blockage at Lapetasi Wharf

By Diana Boar.

Managing Director of UNELCO Frédéric Petit has stated that residents of Ifira Point and Island could receive electricity within two weeks, provided that the road blockage is resolved and UNELCO is granted permission by the authorities to implement its vision plan.

Mr. Petit said employees should not jeopardise their safety if the road remains obstructed, as it continues to pose a danger. It is company policy to ensure that staff are not placed in any situation that involves risk.

UNELCO has proposed several approaches to the authorities, but the final decision rests with them.

The company has suggested two options for the authorities to consider. The first option involves clearing the roadblock at Lapetasi Wharf to minimise risks for electricians who need to locate and repair the underground cable vault.

The second option entails UNELCO facilitating a connection for the cable from Paradise Cove Resort to Dream Cove, again subject to the authorities’ decision.

“If the road to the wharf is cleared and there are no further risks for our staff, along with the necessary approvals for our proposed solutions, we can restore power to the residents of Ifira within just two weeks,” Petit said.

“We have presented our options, but the decision to commence work is not solely ours. We adhere to a strict policy prioritising the safety of our staff. While we are fully equipped to proceed, we require a clear road and assurance of safety before we can begin our work to provide electricity to the residents of Ifira Island and Point.”
