The Vanuatu Primary Producers Authority (VPPA) recently conducted a targeted awareness session for vendors at the Port Vila Central Market, aimed at strengthening the local agricultural sector.
The initiative forms part of the Authority’s ongoing efforts to support local producers and improve market operations nationwide.
The session focused on the benefits of registering under the VPPA Act. Registered primary producers gain access to services such as financial inclusion, assistance with business plans for specialised loans like the National Bank of Vanuatu’s (NBV) Modern Generation Agriculture (MGA) package, direct connections to reliable suppliers and government agencies, and broader domestic and international market opportunities.
Vendors also receive training on production, value-adding, and new trading standards, including the upcoming compulsory use of scales for fair pricing.
VPPA representatives explained that registration helps the government advocate for farmers and vendors, ensuring their needs are included in national policy-making.
Vendors welcomed the engagement, noting the importance of such information for those moving from subsistence selling to sustainable commercial agriculture.
