Naka Trading revolutionises housing with affordable, relocatable homes

Naka Trading, a business that deals in automotive spare parts and vehicle sales, installed its first ready-made house last month, describing it as decent.

The owner of Naka Trading, Andrew Wilbur Napuat, said the idea addresses two major challenges in Vanuatu: the high cost of building decent homes and the issue of evictions leading to the destruction of permanent structures.

Napuat’s statement reflects the affordability and comprehensive features of the house, which costs Vatu (VT) 2.3 million. This price includes all essential elements, such as kitchen furniture, light bulbs, proper doors, window frames, and the building itself. Additionally, the house is designed to be cyclone-proof, which is particularly important in Vanuatu’s climate.

“Given the recurring issue of eviction orders in the country, this ready-made house offers the best solution,” Napuat said. “Its design allows for easy relocation, so if an eviction order is issued, the house can be moved to a new location without incurring damage or significant cost.”

The deposit is VT2 million, and after the installation of the house, the customer can pay the remaining balance at the end of each month, with payments of VT50,000.

The first customers to acquire a ready-made house from Naka Trading are a couple from Tanoliu, North Efate.

Mrs. Michelle Popovi, one of the clients, expressed her satisfaction with the house, noting that it exceeded her expectations.

“We had anticipated that the kitchen would be built outside, but upon arrival, we were pleasantly surprised to find that it was included inside the house,” she said.

The couple also appreciated the flexibility of the design, as the rooms can be adjusted. Although the three-bedroom configuration was initially too small for their needs, they were able to enlarge the room by adjusting and untightening the screws.

The main challenge they identified was arranging transportation to disassemble and move the house, but overall, they are very pleased with their purchase.

By installing ready-made houses, Naka Trading aims to provide a more decent housing solution that is affordable for locals and can be relocated if necessary. It’s a practical solution that addresses both economic and logistical concerns, making housing more adaptable to changing circumstances.
