Handicraft mothers ready for cruise ship return

The return of cruise ships to Port Vila early next month marks a fresh beginning for many mothers who used to sell Vanuatu Made products at the Haos Blong Handikraft/Mahitahi at Feiawa Park, although some are still fearful following the 17 December earthquake.

“There are other mothers who are still afraid to come down, however there are already many asking if they can take their place,” Mrs. Josephine Gideon told the Vanuatu Daily Post. “The interest from tourists is still there, and that gives us hope.

“We feel like we can start over again. In our minds, we can already picture it. We haven’t forgotten how to welcome tourists.”

Mrs. Gideon leads a group of 36 mothers from TAFEA, SHEFA, MALAMPA, and PENAMA provinces who previously sold handmade products at Feiawa Park. After the earthquake, their vending area was closed off, and they were forced to relocate to Saralana Park.

Since then, 18 women from her group have returned to the Haos Blong Handikraft/Mahitahi, joining three others recently approved by the Department of Industry.

Their path to recovery has not been easy. “Our products got damaged and lost their value as we moved them from place to place,” said Mrs. Gideon. “But when the Government gave us the stimulus package, our morale was lifted. It helped us restore our local products and confidence.”

In addition to Government support, Gideon said the Vanuatu Red Cross Society (VRCS) has also stepped in to help, although not all women have received assistance yet.

Carnival Cruise Line has confirmed it will resume visits to Port Vila from 8 August 2025. “We are delighted to be returning to Port Vila, to bring a much-needed economic boost to the city following the devastating earthquake late last year,” said Peter Little, Country Manager for Carnival Corporation & plc.

A temporary tendering site has been arranged while repair works continue on the road connecting the cruise terminal to the Port Vila CBD. Carnival Adventure will be the first ship to visit on 8 August, followed later in the month by Carnival Encounterand Carnival Splendor.

Mrs. Gideon said the cruise return is more than just business; it is a chance to heal.

“We are looking forward to seeing tourists walk around, perform, and buy our products,” she said. “This is our chance to rebuild.”
