Grand Hotel & Casino restoration nears completion after quake

The Grand Hotel & Casino is nearing completion of a major restoration project following the December 2024 earthquake that that caused damage along Port Vila’s waterfront.

Director Robert A. Zagame said the redevelopment reflects the company’s long-standing connection with Vanuatu.

“The Grand is more than stone and steel. It’s 20 years of shared history between our family and the people of Vanuatu,” he said. “We rebuilt with care, from seismic integrity and elevated safety to the way sunlight spills into the lobby.”

Managing Director Bettina Mahieu said the project aims to restore confidence in Port Vila’s tourism sector.

“This renewal is about more than buildings. It’s about continuity and rekindling what makes this place important to the community,” she said.

The redevelopment includes structural reinforcement, upgraded internal systems, and redesigned guest rooms, dining spaces, and public areas. The property’s seventy-four rooms and suites have been refurbished with harbour views and modern amenities, and its conference and events facilities have been reconfigured.

The hotel remains closed while final works continue. Management expects to announce reopening details later this year.
