Fruit Festival to promote cashless innovation for farmers

By Terence Malapa.

The much-anticipated Fruit Festival will run from October 8 to 10, promising a vibrant celebration of local agriculture, culture, and technology.

The event, aligned with government policies to empower farmers and promote digital financial inclusion, will showcase the benefits of cashless transactions through Vodafone’s M-Vatu service. The initiative encourages both farmers and customers to adopt mobile financial tools for safer, easier, and more efficient trade.

More than a display of fresh fruits, the Fruit Festival is a platform for connecting traditional farming with modern technology.

By partnering with Vodafone M-Vatu, the festival promotes the use of mobile money services, enabling farmers to trade more efficiently, access essential financial services, and expand their businesses.

This supports government efforts to build a cashless economy, boost agricultural productivity, and improve farmers’ livelihoods nationwide.

“Our goal is to empower farmers with technology that improves their productivity and market reach,” said Fruit Festival National Coordinator Milroy Cainton. “The festival is the perfect stage to showcase these tools and encourage wider use. This initiative aligns with government policies that support rural development and financial inclusion.”

The festival program is filled with activities and entertainment for all ages. Visitors can expect colourful fruit displays, culinary showcases featuring creative fruit-based dishes, and student competitions designed to raise awareness about agriculture and nutrition while inspiring young people to take an interest in farming.

Farmers will showcase a wide range of produce and artisanal products at dedicated booths, encouraging direct interaction with customers and building stronger community connections. Music will also be at the heart of the celebration, with performances by popular artists including Vanessa Quai and well-known bands from neighbouring countries such as Onetox, Bibao, and K-Sie, alongside many local string bands.

Organisers thanked the festival’s sponsors, including Vodafone, agricultural cooperatives, and community partners, whose support has made the event possible. Their commitment reflects a shared vision of a strong farming community that embraces innovation while maintaining cultural traditions.

The 3-day Fruit Festival offers something for everyone—whether farmers exploring new technology, customers enjoying fresh fruits, or music fans seeking great entertainment. It promises a true celebration of innovation, culture, and community spirit.
