Discover the unique charm of Green House Kava Bar in Anamburu

By Julia Charley.

For this week’s edition of Kava Vine, we take you to the vibrant community of Anamburu, where a remarkable nakamal stands out with its distinctive colour and ambiance.

Nestled along the road leading up to Simbolo area, directly opposite the Vanuatu Mobile Force (VMF) Workshop, you’ll find the Green House Kava Bar, a must-visit destination for kava enthusiasts.

Owned by the enterprising Willie August, a young entrepreneur hailing from Tongoa, the Green House Kava Bar has quickly become a local favorite. Although Willie was unavailable for an interview, we had the pleasure of speaking with Jack, a family member, who shared some fascinating insights about this charming establishment.

The name “Green House Kava Bar” was bestowed by VMF officers who frequent visits the bar after their shifts, a nod to the vibrant green that mirrors the VMF colours. This unique connection adds a layer of community and camaraderie to the atmosphere.

What sets Green House Kava Bar apart is its commitment to quality. August sources his kava exclusively from Malekula, ensuring a consistent and superior product.

When Malekula kava is out of stock, Santo kava serves as a worthy alternative. Within the premises, you’ll find a grinder, a kava-selling window, and a dock. The grinder, available for VT50 per kilogram, processes 6 to 8 kg of kava daily, ensuring fresh and potent servings for all patrons.

A few years ago, August purchased the grinder, which initially saw little use. This sparked the idea to build a comprehensive nakamal, creating an efficient operation with minimal expenses. Since opening earlier this year, Green House Kava Bar has seen a steady influx of both regular and new customers.

The nakamal not only supports Willie’s family but also meets their essential needs.

Looking ahead, August plans to enhance the Green House Kava Bar with exciting upgrades, including the addition of a pool table. This will provide patrons with an engaging activity to enjoy alongside their kava.

The Green House Kava Bar offers kava in two proportions: 1.5 litres for VT1500 and 600ml for VT500. The kava is ready by 4:00pm and typically finishes around 6:30pm, making it an ideal spot for an early evening kava session. Known for its strong and clean kava, Green House Kava Bar promises a satisfying and memorable experience.

Make the trip to Green House Kava Bar – it’s worth every vatu! Enjoy the robust flavours and warm atmosphere, and you’ll see why this nakamal is a standout in Anamburu.
