Department of Tourism introduces eco-friendly ‘Sustainable Bungalows’ initiative

Vanuatu’s Department of Tourism (DoT) has launched a new initiative aimed at promoting sustainability within the country’s tourism industry. This initiative was unveiled during the Public Service (PS) three-day event at the Convention Centre.

The DoT has a Sustainable Tourism Policy with the vision to protect and celebrate Vanuatu’s unique environment, culture, customs, and people through sustainable and responsible tourism. One of their goals is to develop and manage a sustainable and responsible tourism industry.

At the core of this campaign is the introduction of the “Sustainable Bungalow”—eco-friendly accommodation designed to offer visitors a comfortable stay while reducing environmental impact.

According to the DoT, the Sustainable Bungalow is equipped with green energy solutions such as solar power and a water tank, and features traditional decorations. The bungalow serves as a model of sustainable living.

The department has set up this prototype to showcase its vision of a more sustainable tourism experience in Vanuatu.

Inside the bungalow, visitors can observe practical demonstrations of hospitality and housekeeping, with a focus on bed-making techniques, including how to fold towels and bedsheets to meet industry standards. This aspect of the project emphasises the importance of quality service in enhancing the overall guest experience.

At the Convention Centre, the bungalow is positioned near a model of a volcano, highlighting the natural attractions Vanuatu is known for.

This setup illustrates that tourists come to see these wonders and need eco-friendly lodging nearby.

To assist aspiring entrepreneurs and communities in setting up their own sustainable bungalows, the department has provided clear steps to follow. The first step is to consult the DoT for advice and guidance. A few of these bungalows have already been built in the Shepherd Islands and Santo, demonstrating the potential of this initiative.

However, the department’s vision extends beyond just building bungalows.

Their larger goal is to inspire locals to consider how to attract tourists and offer sustainable accommodation options.

As the cost of living rises, focusing on sustainability is not just a trend but a necessary step for the future.

This initiative marks a positive development for Vanuatu’s tourism industry, helping to protect the islands’ natural beauty for future generations while also creating economic opportunities for local communities.
