Call for an international wharf on Tanna

The people of TAFEA, through the TAFEA Provincial Government Council (TPGC), have urged the Government through Prime Minister (PM) Charlot Salwai to construct an international wharf on Tanna Island to accommodate the ongoing developments there.

Patrick Lee, the Vice President of TPGC, informed the Vanuatu Daily Post yesterday that due to the economic activities and increasing demand for services and products, both from the TPGC and the private sector, it is evident that TAFEA is prepared to directly import goods to Tanna.

He clarified that the TPGC firmly believes it can handle an international wharf because local businesses in TAFEA province and particularly from Tanna are already transporting goods to Tanna from Port Vila using containers. This demonstrates their ability to import and export products. He stated that this would enhance the province’s economy.

Mr. Lee also mentioned that the request for an international wharf would also serve as a gateway for cruise liners, considering Tanna’s numerous tourist attractions and offerings.

The Vice President also stated that they have urged the government to construct a hydro project, utilising the region’s river resources to generate both electricity and water supply. With Lenakel town experiencing rapid development, ensuring access to clean water and reliable electricity is a top priority for the provincial authorities, aiming for the best for the people.

Vice President Lee is confident that the government will give a positive response to these requests. He believes this will not only benefit the province’s economy but also have a positive impact on the national economy.

The request for the international wharf and the hydro project are two of four petitions presented by the provincial government authority to PM Salwai during his visit to the island this week.
