Bladiniere roads need proper drainage

By Hilaire Bule.

Residents of Bladiniere Estate on Efate welcomed the recent repairs to their main roads but said a proper drainage system is needed.

They said drainage would help protect the road repairs from heavy rain and prevent the repeated spending of public funds each year.

Currently, Ifira General Services (IGS) Limited has been carrying out maintenance work since last week on the two main roads at Bladiniere near Tagabe Mall and the Latter-day Saints Temple.

A lack of proper drainage has caused water to stagnate along the sides of the roads during last week’s and this week’s heavy rainfall.

Residents also want other roads in Bladiniere to be maintained like the two main roads. Some roads are no longer used by vehicles due to poor conditions, forcing public transport to drop passengers at Tagabe Mall and Chuan Store.

These two shops have become informal pick-up points for passengers who have to walk from near the airport to catch buses.

Residents warned that with the rainy season approaching, the current road repairs will not last if drainage is not addressed.

IGS Ltd said they are only carrying out maintenance work and could not comment further.

Several attempts to get a comment from the Public Works Department on drainage or the maintenance of other roads were unsuccessful.

It has been more than six years since the roads at Bladiniere were last maintained.
