Australia is privileged to be Vanuatu’s biggest development partner, top export destination, top sender of tourists, and top investor in Vanuatu’s economy, according to Australia’s Minister for International Development and the Pacific, Pat Conroy,
Speaking during the transition of P&O Cruises to Carnival Cruise Minister Conroy, emphasized Australia’s integral role in Vanuatu’s economic landscape.
“Vanuatu has so much to offer in trade, investment, and tourism. Australia is privileged not just to be your biggest development partner, but also to be your number one export destination, your number one sender of tourists, and the number one investor in Vanuatu’s economy,” he said.
Conroy highlighted the importance of tourism in Vanuatu’s economy, with Australian visitors consistently making up the majority of arrivals.
According to the Vanuatu Bureau of Statistics, Australian holidaymakers contributed an estimated VT8.3 billion to the economy in the first half of 2024.
“The announcement of Carnival Cruise’s commitment to Vanuatu is another boost for the tourism sector. I know there are literally shiploads of Aussies who can’t wait to come and enjoy all that Vanuatu has to offer,” Conroy said.
In addition to tourism, Conroy underscored Australia’s role as Vanuatu’s primary trading partner and investor. He noted that Australian businesses continue to play a significant role in the nation’s economic growth, further solidifying the bilateral relationship between the two countries.
Minister Conroy also acknowledged the challenges faced by Vanuatu, particularly in the wake of the devastating Port Vila 7.3 earthquake. He commended the efforts of first responders, especially the ProRescue, that is funded by P&O Cruise which is now Carnival Cruise, who worked tirelessly to assist those affected.
“Just last week, you marked two months since the earthquake, and today we gather to recognize and thank the brave men and women who responded immediately, assisted the wounded, and worked on search and rescue efforts,” he said.
Australia deployed its urban search and rescue medical team within 24 hours of the disaster, working alongside Vanuatu’s emergency responders and medical teams. The collaboration included over 1,400 building assessments, covering key infrastructure such as Port Vila International Airport and Vila Central Hospital.
“As part of our 1.3 billion Vatu response package, we have also mobilized structural engineers to support the Vanuatu Government in assessing infrastructure damage, including Clems Hill, Tagabe Bridge, and Wharf Road landslide,” said Conroy.
He noted that the bilateral infrastructure project, R4D, is working on solutions to clear the Wharf Road landslide and restore connectivity, a crucial step in reviving Port Vila’s economy.
Minister Conroy also extended congratulations to Vanuatu’s Prime Minister Jotham Napat on his election, recognizing his leadership in navigating these challenging times.
“Australia will continue to stand with Vanuatu, ensuring our support meets the highest priority needs and reaches the most vulnerable,” he said.
