Final works are underway at Melsisi in central Pentecost ahead of the commissioning of its hydropower system scheduled for this month.
Albert Vireibo of Melsisi confirmed on 24 December 2025 that electricians had installed 167 electricity meters. Power supply was tested in six houses, with lights successfully switched on.
Electricity was later disconnected to allow further installation of meters in additional homes, as well as at public buildings including the school and church.
About 200 households are expected to receive electricity before the commissioning date, with estimates indicating that around 400 houses in Melsisi will eventually be connected. The number could be higher, but several homes are yet to be rebuilt following damage caused by Category 5 Cyclone Harold on 6 April 2020.
The commissioning this month will cover hydropower systems at Melsisi, Waterfall on the western side of Pentecost, and Laringmat on the eastern side of the island.
Residents of Laringmat and Waterfall have already had electricity in their homes since before Christmas last year.
