Prime Minister (PM) Jotham Napat has praised Filipinos in Vanuatu for their contributions to nation building during their recent 127th independence celebration at Warwick Le Lagon.
“Filipino workers have played a pivotal role in various industries, including construction, computer technology, engineering, education, health services, and public administration, demonstrating expertise, dedication, and resilience that have positive impact on our nation building,” he said.
The PM said the strong ties between Vanuatu and the Philippines have helped bring in skilled Filipino workers and boosted cooperation in trade, tourism, culture and education.
“I am pleased to note that our friendship has remained amicable and mutually beneficial, including at international fora, since the establishment of formal diplomatic relations in October 1986,” he said. “This year marks 39 years of our diplomatic ties, and it is my sincere hope that we will continue to elevate this relationship to new heights—particularly through cooperation between our governments in addressing shared challenges such as sustainable development, climate change, natural disasters, limited economic opportunities, inequality, and environmental degradation.”
PM Napat told the Filipino community members to appreciate their freedom.
“…Embrace this moment, acknowledge the determination and patriotism of our forefathers, and let us do our part in securing a free, sustainable, democratic, just and prosperous future for all in our part of the world,” he said.
The Philippine Consul General to Vanuatu, Florentino Bong Serrano, said the commemoration of their Independence Day reminds them of their heroic roots, to be of service to their communities and to others.
He told the Filipinos that even though they are far from home, they are part of their country’s history and their contributions truly matter.
“As our country sails through the tides of different challenges and societal problems at different fronts and levels, I wish to ask everyone here to use our individual and collective powers in ensuring that no one is left behind, abandoned or helpless,” said Serrano.
“By living up to the values of our forefathers, we can, in solidarity with all the people we are dealing with, able to contribute to our collective aspirations of a more sustainable, inclusive and resilient development for both the Philippines and our host country, Vanuatu.”
The commemoration was marked by vibrant cultural performances and good food.
