Access passes for CBD restricted amid demolition efforts

Businesses and individuals who previously received access passes to the Central Business District (CBD) have been advised to return them to the Recovery Operations Centre (ROC) by the end of the day, today.

Director General (DG) of the Prime Minister’s Office, Cherol Ala, revealed that over 3,000 passes were issued to more than 300 businesses. However, access passes are now being restricted due to ongoing assessments and demolition activities in Port Vila.

“As of yesterday, the issuance of access passes has ceased. Only essential services, such as banks and ID services, will be permitted access,” DG Ala stated. “We need to balance operational needs with safety, which remains our top priority.”

Acting Director of the Department of Environment, Protection, and Conservation (DEPC), Grace Naparau, emphasised the importance of public safety during the demolition process. She urged people to stay away from demolition sites to avoid potential health hazards. “The materials being demolished need to be disposed of properly to minimise risks,” Naparau said.

The ROC has confirmed that no further access passes will be issued for businesses or individuals seeking entry to the CBD.
