‘Eliminate Cervical Can in Vanuatu
October 03/2024 | Edition
What a week it has been since launching our 2024 BVL Pink October Initiative!
HPV Awareness
On Tuesday, October 1st, we had the honor of hosting Mackenzie Sitobata, the National Project Coordinator for the elimination of cervical cancer from the Vanuatu Family Health Association, in partnership with the Ministry of Health. Joined by midwives Sr. Sera Toaliu and Sr. Joycline Kalkand, they conducted an informative awareness session on cervical cancer at our main branch, which also connected ladies from the Tagabe and Santo branches through virtual teams.
Mackenzie emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “In Vanuatu, cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among women. Each year, we unfortunately lose women to this disease, and the numbers continue to rise. Today, we take pride in Vanuatu being the first country in the Pacific to commit to the elimination of cervical cancer.”
He further explained the importance of screening: “Without cervical cancer screening, the only time you realize there is a problem is when it is too late-at an advanced stage of the disease. In its early stages, cervical cancer often shows no symptoms; the only way to detect it is through screening.” His words strongly echo and reaffirms our own theme of this year, “Early Detections Saves Lives”.
Together, we are committed to raising awareness and creating a healthier future for women in Vanuatu.
The turnout from the ladies was encouraging, highlighting the interest in health education. The ladies were fortunate to receive vital information from these healthcare professionals on the significance of HPV testing and regular health checks. The event provided a valuable opportunity for participants to engage with experts, ask questions, and deepen their understanding of this crucial health issue.

Free Screening Day-HPV Test
On October 3rd, 2024, Bred Bank organized a free screening day and HPV testing. This coincides with the Pink October awareness month dedicated to breast cancer and women’s health. This initiative followed the awareness event held the day prior, aiming to enhance understanding of HPV and its implications.
The turnout was impressive, with many female staff members eager to learn more about the
testing process, the virus itself, and available treatment options. The tests were specifically catered to women aged 30 to 54, an age group particularly encouraged to participate in HPV screenings. A total of 65 employees registered for the event, with 40 women completing the HPV test. Notably, 25 women chose not to test, citing that they had already undergone screening in the past
Results of the screening will be available tomorrow, October 9. This successful initiative underscores Bred Bank’s commitment to promoting health awareness and providing valuable resources for its staff, fostering a culture of proactive health management.

The week ended on a high note with the BRED Bank’s Splash and Dash: A Pink October Celebration.
On Saturday, October 5th, 2024, BRED Bank hosted another successful Splash and Dash event along the Seafront area. This event was not just a testament to athletic prowess but also a vibrant celebration of Pink October, dedicated to raising awareness for breast cancer. Participants and spectators alike embraced the theme wholeheartedly, with the seafront awash in a sea of pink shirts. This colorful display was not just visually striking but also a powerful symbol of solidarity and support for breast
cancer awareness.
The turnout was exceptional, one of the biggest we had so far, with a total of 72 participants taking part in both short and long courses. The event saw a diverse range of participants, from seasoned athletes to enthusiastic beginners, spanning all age groups. The mix of individual competitors and mixed teams added to the inclusive and spirited atmosphere of the day.
The event kicked off at 8 am, with participants challenging themselves in swimming and running events. The air was filled with enthusiasm and determination as competitors pushed their limits, cheered on by supportive onlookers. The pink- themed event created a unique blend of athletic competition and community spirit, underlining BRED Bank’s commitment to both physical fitness and important social causes.
As we near the end of the Splash and Dash championship series, this Pink October edition stands out as a highlight. BRED Bank extends its heartfelt thanks to all participants, volunteers, and spectators who made this event a resounding success. Your enthusiasm and support not only made for an exciting competition but also contributed to the vital cause of breast cancer awareness.
BRED Bank remains committed to fostering community spirit and supporting important causes through engaging and inclusive events like the Splash and Dash.
