Kava Vine featuring Ekur Mao Kava Bar

By Julia Charley.

This week, the Kava Vine Team visited a hidden gem outside the city—Ekur Mao Kava Bar, located in the quaint community of Ekur within Pango Village.

Founded by the youth of the community, this kava bar is more than just a place to enjoy a relaxing shell of kava; it represents a mission of togetherness and community based on three pillars — Development, Security and Unity.

The name “Ekur “ represents the area and “Mao” means unity. Jackson Kalomtak, who hails from Pango and has roots in Tongoa and Emae, oversees the operations of the kava bar. As the Chairman of the Youth Association for four years, Kalomtak has dedicated himself to advancing development, security, and unity in the community, all on a volunteer basis.

Ekur Mao was established after noticing the community’s afternoon gatherings for kava drinking.

This bar became a central hub, strengthening community bonds. One of its major contributions is to the Development Pillar, where the bar has helped cement a road leading up to the nakamal, enhancing accessibility for both the bar and local residences.

The kava served at Ekur Mao is as diverse as it is potent. With four popular varieties—Santo, South West Bay Malekula, Maewo, and Tongoa—there’s something for every palate. During the Kava Vine Team’s visit, we savoured Tongoa kava, an 8-year-old variety cultivated after Tropical Cyclone (TC) Pam. The quality and strength of the kava are highly praised by patrons, making it a favourite among the community.

In just two years, Ekur Mao has become a cornerstone of the community, not only for its kava but also for promoting social activities. A new pool table has been added, providing a spot for locals to unwind and socialise.

The natural surroundings of Ekur Mao Kava Bar create a serene environment, perfect for enjoying a shell of kava. The kava here is clean and strong, offering an authentic experience.

So, if you’re looking for a unique and enriching experience, Ekur Mao Kava Bar is well worth the visit.

Go see for yourself and taste the quality of their kava—it’s a journey worth taking!
