National University celebrates four years of growth and global partnerships under Vice-Chancellor Nirua

The National University of Vanuatu (NUV) has celebrated four years under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Mr. Jean-Pierre Nirua.

During this period, the institution has seen notable growth and extended its global presence through strategic collaborations and innovative developments.

Under Mr. Nirua’s guidance, NUV has formed partnerships with prestigious institutions and organisations.

This year alone, the university has signed new agreements with Western Sydney University, the University of Wollongong, the Food and Agriculture Organisation, the Public Service Commission, the Global Partnership for Education, and the Oceania National Olympic Committee (ONOC).

Additionally, agreements with James Cook University and Université de la Nouvelle-Calédonie have been renewed, and efforts are underway to renew joint agreements with Université de Nouvelle-Calédonie, Université Jean-Jaurès (ISTHIA), Victoria University of Wellington, and Taylors’ University of Malaysia.

These partnerships reflect NUV’s dedication to furthering international cooperation and increasing educational and training opportunities for its students.

Since its inaugural ceremony on 29 February 2020, NUV has undergone substantial expansion and development.

The university now offers new courses such as Climate Resilience & Humanitarian Action and plans to introduce a Diploma in ICT and a Bachelor in Inclusive Education by 2025.

In line with its mission to provide high-quality education, NUV integrated the Vanuatu Institute of Teacher’s Education in 2021, now known as the School of Education. The university is also working towards transitioning the Vanuatu Agriculture College, Vanuatu College of Nursing Education, Maritime and Fisheries Training Institute, and Vanuatu Institute of Technology into Schools of the University.

To complement its growth and international partnerships, Vice-Chancellor Nirua has strengthened NUV’s intra-university strategic alliances in 2024 by leading NUV’s participation in the Inaugural Pacific Higher Education Summit hosted by the President of the University of Hawaii and the National Universities Vice-Chancellors’ Inaugural Meeting in Port-Vila, hosted by the Director General of the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Secretariat and NUV.

These new intra-university collaborations add to NUV’s ongoing membership in the Pacific Islands University Regional Network (PIURN).

Research promotion is a key focus at the university, with over 15 ongoing projects. With an increase in academic and research capacity, NUV aims to make research a core component of its service to the university and the country.
