Drivers urged to renew permits before December 31
By Kizzy Kalsakau.

Public transport operators have been urged to renew their drivers’ permits before December 31 ahead of the 2027 licensing year, warning that fees could increase next year.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Public Land Transport Authority (PLTA), Reginald Tabi, said operators whose permits expire at the end of this year should take advantage of the current renewal fees rather than wait until next year, when higher charges may be introduced.
He said the reminder applies to all public transport operators across the provinces.
Mr. Tabi also reminded operators that running a public transport business without a valid operating permit, business licence or insurance is an offence under the Public Land Transport Act No. 15 of 2015 and can result in fines.
He said the authority had been enforcing the Act since 2018 and was continuing to strengthen its regulatory framework through additional regulations developed with the support of the Minister and the PLTA Board.
The CEO estimated that the number of registered public transport vehicles is continuing to grow, reflecting the increasing demand for transport services throughout Vanuatu.
However, he identified road infrastructure as a major challenge facing the sector, particularly in Port Vila, where public transport vehicles contribute to heavy congestion during morning and afternoon peak hours.
Tabi said the government need to consider developing alternative roads and improving existing routes to accommodate the growing number of vehicles.
He urged all operators to ensure their vehicles and drivers hold the necessary permits and licences, stressing that compliance with transport regulations is required to operate legally.
