Vendors at the Seafront House of Handicraft in Port Vila will organize a Christmas sale next week, to encourage new members and showcase their work.
Josephine Gideon, who oversees TAFEA, SHEFA, MALAMPA, and PENAMA Provinces at the Handicraft House expressed regret that TORBA and SANMA currently have no representatives involved. The vendors aim to attract artisans from these two provinces by promoting their work and offering Christmas sales.
Gideon, who has been a vendor since 2017, serves as the President of the Local Handicraft Connection Association. Now in her third term, she oversees approximately 43 vendors.
The Christmas sale is timely, as many people are looking for unique, locally made gifts. They believe that local handicrafts will appeal to both locals and visitors shopping for presents for family and friends.
The event is themed in Bislama as “Hamas Hamas Vanuatu Hemi Blo Me,” which translates to “Whatever it Takes, Vanuatu Belongs to Me” in English.
The Vanuatu House of Handicraft is a marketplace that showcases and sells authentic Vanuatu-made crafts. It currently supports 43 vendors, offering them a platform to sell handmade items, often created on-site, or sourced wholesale from the outer islands.
The market offers a variety of items, including baskets, home decor, carvings, jewelry, and artwork.
This initiative is vital in reviving traditional handicrafts, helping to counter the rise of plastic and imported souvenirs.
