Digicel Vanuatu has donated VT1 million to the Vanuatu Red Cross Society (VRCS) to support ongoing earthquake recovery efforts.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Digicel Vanuatu, Gary Sue Fong, said the donation is intended to assist the VRCS in its response efforts, ensuring aid reaches those affected by the disaster.
“We have been long-time partners with the Vanuatu Red Cross, and we continue to support them through our MyCash platform, allowing for the disbursement of cash assistance across the country. We are committed to working with them on this project and will continue our support,” Fong said.
He acknowledged the extensive work being carried out by the VRCS to assist affected communities and noted that Digicel’s contribution would further bolster these relief efforts.
“We know they are doing a lot of great work across the country to help those impacted. This kind of assistance will continue to provide much-needed support to those affected by the earthquake,” he added.
Fong also revealed that Digicel is in discussions with other organisations and government departments regarding further support initiatives. He mentioned that they recently collaborated with the Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) to provide donations for schools affected by the disaster.
Meanwhile, Secretary General (SG) of the VRCS, Dickinson Tevi, thanked Digicel for its continued support, noting the value of their partnership.
“Our relationship with Digicel has been strong, and their support during this earthquake recovery effort is crucial,” Tevi said.
He explained that while the VRCS has launched an international appeal through the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), they have yet to reach their targeted funding goal. However, contributions such as Digicel’s donation will play a key role in supporting affected individuals.
“With the cash transfer programme, we have already registered around 800 beneficiaries. Digicel is a major partner in this effort. Apart from that, they have also been supporting schools with earthquake preparedness initiatives and assisting communities with water tanks,” Tevi added.
He reiterated that the damage caused by the earthquake is extensive, and ongoing support is essential in helping affected communities rebuild their lives.
