Suspended DG and Trade Director accused of VT5M self-awarded contract

By Terence Malapa.

The suspended Director General (DG) of the Ministry of Tourism, Trade, and Industry, along with the Director of Trade, allegedly awarded a VT5 million consultancy contract to a company they co-owned.

A government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the Vanuatu Daily Post that an investigation by the Public Service Commission (PSC) uncovered the alleged conflict of interest. The inquiry revealed that the contract was awarded to Prolink Consultancy Group, a company registered under the Vanuatu Financial Services Commission (VFSC).

Documents obtained by Vanuatu Daily Post confirm that the company was previously owned by suspended DG Jimmy Rantes and Noel Kalo, the suspended Director of Trade.

The government source stated that the investigation confirmed the allegations, leading to the suspension of both officials.

“This case highlights a serious breach of ethical standards, raising concerns about conflict of interest, abuse of power, and lack of integrity within the ministry,” the government informant said.

“When individuals in leadership positions use their authority for personal gain, it erodes public trust and accountability.”

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to transparency and accountability, stressing that unethical practices in public service will not be tolerated.

Meanwhile, the suspended DG and Director have stated that they will respond to the allegations in their official letter to the PSC regarding their suspension.
